BSCS Undergoes Online Accreditation
Despite the ongoing pandemic, the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) program of the College of Computing and Information Sciences of Northwest Samar State University-Main Campus went through virtual Third Survey by the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP), Inc. last December 14-18, 2020.
An opening program was held online via Zoom app in the morning of December 14 with the following in attendance: the accrediting team headed by Dr. Noreen B. Fuentes (team leader) and Dr. Denilin B. Avila, both from Cebu Technological University (CTU); and Prof. Fe A. Alavanza of Jose Rizal Memorial State University (JRMSU); Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo, University President; Dr. Marciano B. Apilado, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Riz Rupert L. Ortiz, Vice President for Research, Extension & External Affairs; Dr. Francisco B. Bacamante Jr., CCIS Dean; Dr. Rodolfo F. Dollado Jr., Quality Assurance Director; other NwSSU officials; and BSCS faculty. Dr. Apilado cited in his rationale that help from external experts in this time of pandemic is very much appreciated as the University continues to aim for quality education, improved research capability and extension and community development programs. President Pecayo in his message applauded the teaching and non-teaching personnel for being brave enough to face the accreditation challenge. “Let us all remember that our journey to excellence continues not just this accreditation week, but accepting that everyday we all face our weaknesses and failures as stepping stone to success,” Dr. Pecayo further said.
To facilitate the online program evaluation, the following faculty counterparts worked closely with the accreditors: Mr. Ronald A. Amoguez (Area I-Vision, Mission, Goals and Objectives), Mr. Joselito B. Tangaran (Area II-Faculty), Ms. Cristy S. Carpon (Area III-Curriculum and Instruction), Dr. Ervin L. Rodriguez (Area IV-Support to Students), Mr. Aaron Jude C. Pael (Area V-Research and Extension), Mr. Salvador L. Flores Jr. (Area VII-Library), Engr. Dennis S. Antivo (Area VIII-Physical Plant and Facilities), Engr. Gregor Pio F. Diongon (Area IX-Laboratories) and Ms. Rialyn Baguio (Area X-Administration).
The evaluation and validation of the documents was conducted on the first two days (December 14-15) and on the fourth day (December 17) of the online accreditation. This was done through the Google drive, with a standby Zoom cloud meeting access for accreditors and faculty counterparts. On the third day (December 16), the accreditors conducted virtual visitations of the campus facilities, laboratories, library and different offices; class observations; research, extension and other project virtual visitations; and interview with different stakeholders. The accreditors then consolidated their findings in the evening of December 17 and did revalidation and finalization of their reports in the morning of the last day (December 18). Lastly, an exit conference was held in which Dr. Pecayo expressed his commitment to work together especially on the areas that the BSCS program in particular and the University as a whole have to improve.
The BSCS program was submitted for Third AACCUP Survey after the program’s Level II Re-Accredited status lapsed last September 2019.
