The Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) Dragon Boat Rowing Team ranked second in the First Local Dragon Boat Rowing Competition held, January 26, 2020 along Lonoy-Oquendo Hibatang River.
Mr. Rhio Dimakiling, dean of the College of Engineering, steered the paddlers, namely: Jesus Calamayo, Andro Santiago, Anthony Catulang, Emerald Chavez, Mark Christian Conarco, July Correche, Vercelle Docdoc, Danilo Ebit, Ignacio Tocayon, Jr., Ryan Lauderes, Ritchie Maribojoc, Ricardo Mensorado, Jr. Edward Mensorado, Jay Vee Ortiz, Merary Caang, Eric Calamayo, Ernie Calamayo, Jhonbert Lathrop, Marvin Begonte, and, Fernando Gariando.
“It was so fulfilling that despite our age and the very short period of training we were able to finish the race. We hope that this could inspire our young athletes to join sports like this and to work hard towards their best versions of themselves,” said Maribojoc.
The competition was organized by Hibatang-River Paddlers Association in partnership with the City Government of Calbayog through the City Mayor Ronaldo P. Aquino, Vice Mayor Diego P. Rivera, City Councilors, and Congressman Edgar Mary S. Sarmiento of the First District of Samar.
